Can we detect the damage of a heatwave on vineyards using Sentinel-2 optical remote sensing data?

Climate change will exacerbate environmental threats, which will, in turn, affect agricultural production patterns. This study addresses the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 (S2) optical remote sensing data to map consequences heatwaves on vineyard plots. The proposed method damaged and undamaged vineyards is based use an inter-annual (C1) intra-annual (C2) criterion derived from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated S2 data. While compares NDVI heatwave year average previous years with no heatwave, values before after same year. Predictions either criteria or both combined were tested against two datasets collected during field surveys performed 2020 2021, different ways recording damage caused grapevine by 2019 southeastern France. Results showed that within reference plots heat damage, 46 %, 62 % 40 pixels correctly predicted as C1, C2 their combination, respectively. Within plots, 91 88 99 also only severe leaf was detected NDVI. combination C1 provides most accurate detection vineyards.
